What is a Pulse? Other than the one that keeps our heart’s beating, this pulse we refer to is actually similar in nature, keeping our bodies running smoothly. Pulses are a superfood including chickpeas, lentils, dry peas and beans. They’re incredibly healthy, nutritious, tasty and affordable and never out of season. Big bonus!

  •      High in protein
  •      Excellent source of fibre
  •      Rich in iron
  •      Excellent source of folate
  •      Good source of potassium
  •      High in antioxidants

Including pulses in your diet contributes to overall good health and can reduce the risk of certain diseases. Pulses are rich in protein and fibre, and low in fat, which can all help manage body weight. The high protein and fibre sustain you longer so you’re not hungry shortly after your meal. A beneficial aspect in addition to fibre is pulses have complex carbohydrates that take longer to break down compared to other carbohydrates, providing energy longer, and can increase production of good bacteria for a healthy gut.

Pulses can aid in preventing and managing diabetes because they do not cause blood sugar levels to rise like sugary or starchy foods that are low in fibre. Maintaining blood sugar levels is so important for people living with diabetes and can help them live a normal life.

Overall, pulses are a heart healthy food choice. Research has shown that eating pulses can lower blood cholesterol, reduce blood pressure and help with body weight management, which are all risk factors for heart disease. Pulses are low in saturated and trans fats and high in soluble fibre. These are all important for a heart healthy diet.
